Park face-lift to span eight months

Fijian authorities have yet to decide on the starting date for a planned $1.4 million upgrade of Ratu Sukuna Park but say it will spread over eight months.

Unveiled yesterday by Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar, the face-lift boasts energy-efficient technology facilities, digital screen for events, park landscaping, street furniture upgrade, park lights, water features, drinking water fountain, perimeter garden, connected walkways, a paved platform in front of the podium and digital charging ports.

The Suva City Council will employ a professional arborist to preserve the rain trees and flame trees growing within the park, which Kumar says are a piece of history and should not be touched. 

Chair of Special Administrators for Lami and Suva of the Suva City Council Isikeli Tikoduadua said of the planned works, the major developments are the new podium and amphitheatre which will be carried out with minimal disturbance.

Present at the unveiling were council special administrators, representatives of the Roko Tui Suva Ratu Solomone Udunavosa, Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, President of the Suva Retailers Association Jitesh Patel, appointed architect Peter Rankin, Suva markets vendors and handicraft vendors, Suva bus proprietors and private sector representatives.  Architect Asia Pacific Inc is the appointed designers for the re-development of the park.
