Empowering women to excel in all areas of development and nation-building should be of utmost importance to any government.
And Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica said the Coalition government was working on supporting and empowering such groups.
Speaking at the launch of Women in Tech in Suva, Kamikamica said Fiji was moving and trying to adapt to the evolving ideals worldwide and promoting the protection and advancement of women and girls in Fiji.
“The contributions of the ICT sector to the Fijian economy in 2022, accounted for approximately 4.14 percent of the nation’s GDP. Globally, the ICT services sector is growing at twice the rate of other industries and is creating jobs at six times that of the broader economy.”
“The necessity to confront the existing gender disparity in STEM is important, given that globally, only 31 percent of STEM researchers are women, and women hold merely one in eight executive roles in this sector. It critical to foster an environment where women are not only participants in the tech industry but can take on leadership roles.”
Women in Tech executive Sagufta Janif said the launch was a milestone achievement that would go down in the history books of Fiji.
“To see this take place today is a huge achievement for us. It is a move that will advance and move women who specialise in this field.”
The event was also attended by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran amongst other notable guests and leaders.
