A man is in custody and several others are still being questioned in relation to a brawl that broke out in Suva on Saturday night involving members of the Vusu Raiders Rugby league club from Namatakula in Nadroga and the bouncers of Regulars nightclub.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) ACP Livai Driu said they expected more to be held in custody as interviews and investigations continued.
Driu also confirmed visiting the village of Namatakula to meet with the players, team management and the families of the players.
“We went down yesterday (Sunday) to see the team, to hear their report and to visit the Vanua after what had transpired in Suva on Saturday.”
Outgoing Club secretary Akuila Masi said the players that had been admitted in hospital on Saturday night continue to be in a stable condition, inluding some fans who had travelled with the team.
“The boys are much better and this includes the fans who also got injured are still in hospital under the observation of the doctors.”
The rugby league team had been in Suva on Saturday to hold their annual awards night at the Vineyard Palace restaurant in Suva and the players later went out to the clubs before boarding the bus back to Nadroga when the fight broke out.
A bystander had taken video footage which went viral yesterday. It showed a bouncer kicking down a senior team member, Levani Tani after he tried getting up off the pavement.
Vusu Raiders are the current holders of the national Vodafone Rugby League trophy, the Eastern Rugby League championship and the Fijian Cup 9s tournament rugby league trophy.
