A 36-year-old man from Legalega in Nadi is facing charges after allegedly masterminding a scheme that netted him over $1,600 from a major retailer of home durable goods.
The incident happened on 18 August 2023.
According to the Fiji Police MPaisa Task Force, the accused exploited the retailer’s MPaisa platform—a widely used mobile payment service—to carry out his plan.
Posing as the manager of the mobile service provider, he contacted a staff member at the retailer’s Labasa branch. Under the guise of a routine update for the MPaisa QR machine, he issued instructions to the unsuspecting employee. The unsuspecting staff member followed the directives, transferring $1650 from their account to the accused’s MPaisa account.
The accused faces one count of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception. He is due to appear at the Suva Magistrates Court today.
