Concerns have been raised about the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as head of Fiji’s local anti-corruption institution.
Malimali who is being investigated by FICAC was yesterday confirmed as it’s new Commissioner. FICAC stated that the appointment followed the official process – ie through the Judicial Services Commission and signed off by the President.
Opposition MP Premila Kumar questioned whether the JSC was aware of these investigations when it confirmed Malimali’s appointment or whether the issue was overlooked.
“It is both astonishing and unethical that the JSC has confirmed the appointment of a person who is currently under investigation by the very organisation she is now set to lead,” Kumar said.
Kumar has called for a detailed explanation from the JSC regarding the appointment process, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability.
Meanwhile, investigations into Malimali’s conduct are reported to be ongoing, with Francis Pulewai continuing as acting FICAC Deputy Commissioner.
