Maintaining strong relationship can heal families and communities

Strong relationships are essential to the health of families, workplaces, and communities and when this breaks down intentional efforts are needed to rebuild and strengthen them.

Speaking at the annual conference for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Nadi today, Fiji Police Forensic Department expert Dr James Kalougivaki said this was crucial in securing a sound Fiji for the future.

“This is not just a personal issue; it’s a societal one. Relationship-building should be a core principle in every policy, whether at the level of government or within the vanua. Policies must recognize the value of family time and avoid practices that erode it.”

“When families are given space to connect, they grow stronger—and strong families build strong communities.”

Dr Kalougivaki spoke to the conference participants about the importance of re-emphasizing family values in Fiji as a way of rebuilding Fiji.

“Relationships need to be strengthened. So whatever we do, let’s not rob family time, so that the families can have strong relationships.Whatever we do, we must protect time for relationships. They are the foundation of trust, resilience, and unity across all sectors of society.”

He shared that in his field of work as a pathologist he has come across so many deaths that resulted out of people not having a strong support network because of poor relationships.
