Lami may see an increasing number of cases, as 4 new unlinked cases emerge

Thirty-nine new coronavirus cases were announced in Fiji today, of which 32 have been linked to existing clusters and seven are unlinked including one recorded along Reservoir Road in Suva and four more in Lami.

Overall, CWM Hospital reported the most number of cases at 11. The other linked cases include six that have been traced back to the Nawaka cluster, five to the Nasinu Police Barracks cluster, three at the FICAC Warehouse, two each from the Navy and Waila clusters, and one each from the IMT, Naitasiti and Caubati clusters.

The unlinked cases include four reported in Lami, and one each in Toorak, and Nasinu. The Ministry of Health (MOH) is still to link back these cases to those, unlinked as well, recorded in the same areas yesterday – two, one and two respectively. Even before yesterday’s cases, Lami has had a few positive cases but associated with other clusters.

Other clusters that have been traced back to Lami include the two from Nadonumai linked to the Navy grouping in late May. The other cluster is MOH’s Incident Management Warehouse team that is based out of Lami as well.

“In the near term, we are concerned that Lami may see increasing numbers of cases. We also anticipate more cases from the cluster at the Police Barracks in Nasinu,” the ministry said in a statement. “Our stationary and mobile screening teams are tracing and testing known contacts and are isolating positive patients to prevent further spread of the virus.”

“Our mitigation strategy announced yesterday is targeted at isolating cases, treating patients who develop severe cases of the disease, and ensuring that vaccines continue to be administered to the public.”

To date, 228,030 people in Fiji have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Seven more patients have recovered, which means there are now 656 active cases in isolation. There have been 849 cases during the current outbreak that started in April 2021, and a cumulative total of 919 cases since Fiji’s first case in March 2020. There have been 256 recoveries and four deaths due to COVID-19. A total of three COVID-19 positive patients died from pre-existing illnesses.
