Heavy rain warning in force for West of Fiji

March 3, 2022

Fiji’s weather office has issued a heavy rain warning for people living in northern and western Viti Levu including the interior of Ba and Nadroga-Navosa, the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups.

Flash flooding of low-lying areas is to be expected likewise poor visibility on land and sea, Fiji Meteorological Services stated in their latest update.

A heavy rain alert remains in force for Western Vanua Levu (Bua, Nasau, Lekutu, Batiri, Dreketi, Seaqaqa), Northwestern Vanua Levu (Labasa, Nadogo, Dogotuki), Southern Viti Levu [greater Sigatoka and Korolevu area], Kadavu, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

Meanwhile, tropical depression 09F (TD09F) continues to linger in our region over open waters to the far southeast of New Caledonia. In the next 24 hours, TD09F is expected to move eastwards and make an anticlockwise loop then dive southeastwards.

There is potential for TD09F to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours. The system is expected to move out of our region by this weekend. TD09F does not pose any direct threat to the Fiji group. The Fiji Meteorological Service will continue to monitor this weather event and update warnings and forecasts accordingly.
