Health Recalls ‘Hot and Tasty’ Peanuts

Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MoHMS) has issued a nationwide recall of “Hot and Tasty” brand Peanuts (150g) due to elevated levels of total aflatoxins and aflatoxin B1, exceeding safety standards.

The recall follows an alert from the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN).

In a statement, the ministry stated that the peanuts, imported from India by Rans Import & Export and distributed by Shop and Save Supermarket, pose serious health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children under 5, adults over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Aflatoxin exposure can lead to acute and chronic health issues, including liver damage and cancer, the ministry said advising consumers not to consume these peanuts and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

“The ministry’s Food Unit has conducted its investigations and met with the importer and distributor who have agreed to remove the products from the shelves, and to comply with the recall. Health inspectors from the ministry and councils are following up to ensure the distributor and retailers are taking prompt actions in this matter.”

Medical professionals are urged to report any related health concerns to the ministry.
