Government weighs in on bus card money transfers

Government is working with mobile network giants Vodafone Fiji to enable the transfer of funds from old or lost e-transport cards to new ones.

The announcement was made in Parliament today by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

“The Steering Committee has instructed Vodafone to enable transfers from legitimate cards to replacement ones provided that proper documentation is submitted.”

The Prime Minister said that while there will be a process for this, it will enable customers to redeem their funds.

“This measure ensures that passengers do not lose their stored value in cases such as card loss and theft and in such cases a Police report will reinforce the system’s integrity by requiring verification before any transfer is approved and also safeguards accumulated funds and maintaining public confidence in the e-ticketing system.”

Many users have complained that they are unable to transfer the remaining balance from their old Vodafone e-transport cards to the new ones, causing frustration and confusion.

Vodafone Fiji had earlier stated that balances on lost or old e-Transport cards could not be transferred, except in limited cases for student (Blue) cards.

According to Vodafone Fiji, e-Transport cards operate offline, which means they cannot be blocked, tracked, or remotely accessed once lost. As a result, balances on lost Red, Yellow, Purple, or Green cards are not recoverable or transferable under any circumstances
