A call has been made for Government to clamp down on what has been termed ‘reckless speeding of truck drivers, bus drivers, and heavy weight vehicles.”
Opposition MP Ketan Lal said recent accidents, with the latest being the Goundar Shipping Ltd bus in Lautoka yesterday noted the irresponsible behavior of drivers.
“It is high time we call a spade a spade. The persistent issue of speeding on our roads by trucks, buses, and public service vehicles cannot be ignored any longer. These vehicles, often driving well above the national speed limits, pose a severe threat to the safety of all road users. The time for mere awareness campaigns has passed; we need decisive action now.”
Lal said the Land Transport Authority needs to implement stringent measures on vehicles now.
“I propose the mandatory installation of speed limiters or Speed Lock Systems on all public service vehicles (PSV) and trucks operating on our roads. These speed limiters should cap the maximum speed at 80 km/hr, aligning with the national speed limit.”
“While I acknowledge that certain transport vehicles are restricted to drive at 60 km/hr but not with Speed Locks, setting a uniform speed lock limit of 80 km/hr will provide some flexibility while ensuring a substantial reduction in the risk of accidents caused by speeding. This measure is not just about compliance; it is about safeguarding the lives of our citizens.”
Lal added that these accidents were avoidable.
“We must not wait for another tragic accident to spur us into action. The time for awareness is over; it is now time for action. We call on the LTA, the government, and all stakeholders to prioritize road safety and implement the necessary measures to protect our people.”
