The Fiji Rugby Union came under heavy criticism for its handling of Amenoni Nasilasila’s match ban on Saturday, during the lead-up to the Skipper Cup provincial rugby final between Naitasiri and Malolo in Suva.
Before the match, Nasilasila joined Malolo’s warm-up on the field as support staff but was asked to leave by Fiji Rugby Union officials that spectators at the stadium witnessed with some calling it “humiliating and embarrassing.”
Fans took to social media to express their disappointment over how the situation was handled.
“They didn’t have to do it in front of the thousands that had gathered. They could have waited for him to come off the playing ground,” said Lote Biukila, a rugby enthusiast said.
In response, the FRU defended its decision, stating that Nasilasila did not meet the eligibility requirements.
According to the competition’s Terms of Participation, players must be registered and have played in the tournament to qualify for the final and Nasilasila had not played any matches for Malolo during the season.
FRU also raised concerns about player safety, noting that Nasilasila had not played competitive rugby for over two months.
“Throwing him into a final without the necessary preparation is not in his best interest or the interest of the game,” the Union said.
The FRU emphasized that the decision was not a rejection of the player but a step to ensure a safe and structured return to rugby.
“We believe in second chances and the power of rugby to heal and rebuild lives,” the statement said. “The FRU remains committed to supporting his rehabilitation journey and will facilitate his return to rugby in due course.”
Nasilasila was recently released after serving a prison sentence of six years for rape.
