Former Fiji PM Bainimarama Released From Prison

November 8, 2024

Former Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been released from prison, six months after being sentenced.

Bainimarama had been imprisoned on 9 May 2024, alongside former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, after both were found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice in a case related to the University of the South Pacific.

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) issued a statement confirming his release today, stating that it followed a review of his case under the Corrections Act.

However, the FCS did not provide further details on the specific conditions of Bainimarama’s release. His reintegration into society will be closely monitored to ensure compliance with those conditions.
