The future challenge of the Fiji National University is to remain focused, maintain traditional vocational education, to drive change and value employers’ importance towards career pathways.
This was the remarks made by FNU Vice Chancellor Professor Nigel Healey at the University’s 10th anniversary celebrated at the Grand Pacific Hotel last Saturday.
The University has progressed from its inception on 15 February 2010 from combining six government tertiary colleges into forming a single national institution.
From its first ten years of academic services the University has laid foundations for growth, developed and will continue to enhance the level and quality of academic programmes it provides.
Deputy Chair of Council Tessa Price said the Council has set forth a challenging agenda for the next decade.
“Our primary focus is to further strengthen our teaching and research, both to take advantage of the greatly enhanced digital infrastructure in Fiji and to prepare graduates for the opportunities being created by Industry4.0”, Ms Price said.
Price added the government has invested heavily into the institution and hopes it will deliver the expectations of the country.
The Council’s priorities for the next decade will focus on providing accessible education and teaching excellence, undertake impactful research on policy priorities of Fiji research, building staff capability and providing an environmental sustainable University.
Part of creating a world class learning environment this year will open four major new facilities: a greenfield Labasa campus, a four-storey business school and sports complex at Nasinu campus and a new three story teaching facility at Fiji Maritime Academy to cater for the new degree programme in Nautical Science.
Chief guest Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete also commended the efforts contributed by students and staff in enhancing a wholesome education environment it seeks to provide.
The University had invested $20 million into the digital domain to enhance and improve the overall look and services provided online and also the anticipated 2020 graduation will feature its first PhD graduates.
