Flying Fijians ready for Samoa; Masi and Stino welcomed back after Olympics journey

Fiji Water Flying Fijians Head Coach Mick Byrne believes that the team has what it takes to deliver their best in the first round of the Asahi Dry Pacific Nations Cup match against Samoa this Friday in Suva.

Speaking to the media in Suva, Byrne says that even with the short window given for preparation the team have turned up and are giving their best at training.

“We got into camp on Saturday and spent the first few hours getting the induction sorted. We needed to just have clarity on our different roles, the mission ahead and our goal as a team. That was one of the most important things we needed to get done. The physical prep will follow.”

Byrne said it was also an added advantage having Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada back in the squad.

“They have settled back in well, it’s as if they never left. We know they made an impact in the national 7s side to the Olympics and even though they couldn’t bring back the gold medal, we are very proud of their contribution.”

Byrne says he is looking forward to seeing combinations work together on the field especially with the new additions made into the squad earlier this year.

“We have the likes of Vuate Karawalevu who has been consistent and is disciplined in training. Watching him at training and seeing how dedicated and committed he is, he is someone to watch when he plays.”

Fiji’s second game in the PNC round will be against Ikale Tahi of Tonga and will take place at Teufaiva Stadium, on the island kingdom, on Friday 6th September.
