Flying Fijians out muscle Wales in thriller; ‘It’s about pride in the jersey’ Byrne

November 11, 2024

“They gave their best out their on the field and I am absolutely proud of them.”

These were the words of Fiji Water Flying Fijians Head Coach Mick Byrne at the conclusion of the Fiji vs Wales game in Cardiff this morning.

Byrne said the win was deserving after the players regrouped after the loss to Scotland and worked extra hard in preparation for Wales.

“We had a few new players come in, but the jersey is still the same color. And while it might be different people wearing the jersey, it’s about putting pride back into the jersey. And they did that this week.”

“I was just ecstatic for the players. I know how hard they worked. There are a few players who have played on this ground a few times and haven’t had the win so for them to have this success tonight was brilliant.”

‘The coaches have done a great job preparing the players.”

On Fijian Drua flyhalf Caleb Muntz taking out the Player of the Match, Byrne said Muntz had worked equally hard as the rest of the team.

‘Caleb is growing everyday, he’s a young player, he’s only had 1 full season for Super Rugby, got injured during the World Cup, but I think he stamped himself in Tier 1 rugby today not many fly halves come out and play like he did as a 10 but he did it.”

“Im proud of him, number 1, for the work he’s put in for the last couple of years.”

Fiji now prepare to take on Spain at the Estadio Jose Zorilla on November 17th before facing Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on 23rd November.
