Fiji’s Opposition Leader Nominates Ruveni Nadalo for Speaker of Parliament

November 11, 2024

Fiji’s Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu has announced Ruveni Nadalo as his nominee for the Speaker of Parliament, a position currently up for election.

Nadalo, a former Deputy Speaker of Parliament who split from the FijiFirst party in the 2022 election, where he contested under the banner of the We Unite Fiji Party, a party he led, is set to face a competitive contest against the government’s nominee, retired judge Justice Filimone Jitoko.

In a statement, Seruiratu described Nadalo as a distinguished leader with knowledge of parliamentary procedures and a commitment to democracy and inclusiveness. He highlighted Nadalo’s experience as a former Deputy Speaker, where he was recognised for his impartiality and ability to maintain decorum during debates.

“His suitability for the Speaker position is unquestioned,” Seruiratu said. “He has had international engagements, which included studying how other countries run their Parliaments. This has put him in good stead to assume the position of Speaker.”

The parliamentary vote to elect a new speaker is scheduled to start at 8am tomorrow. The speaker’s position became vacant after Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu was elected president last month.
