Fiji rallied back to beat Pumas for Gold medal play-off spot

Fiji was made to work hard for their 26-14 victory over a determined Argentinian outfit in the semifinal and will take on New Zealand in the gold medal match at Tokyo Stadium at 9pm (Fiji Time) tonight.

The Olympics gold medal champions scored two tries via Sireli Maqala and Meli Derenalagi to lead 12-0 before the Pumas reciprocated with two of their own, but both converted via Marcos Moneta and Ignacio Mendy in the dying stages of the first half to lead 14-12 at the break.

Tries by Jiuta Wainiqolo and Semi Radradra kept Fiji’s gold medal campaign hopes alive.

New Zealand booked their place after a 29-7 win over Great Britain, and come into the game looking for their first Olympics gold medal after their fifth-place finish in Rio five years ago.

Argentina remain in the hunt for their first Olympic sevens medal, and will take on Great Britain in the bronze medal match at 8.30pm.

Earlier in the day, Japan defeated Republic of Korea 31-19, Kenya accounted for Ireland 22-0, USA defeated Canada 21-14 and South Africa ousted Australia 22-19.
