Fiji PM Reaffirms Unity After Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s Presidential Election

October 31, 2024

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the unity within his government, describing the election of his nominee, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as a clear indication of strength and confidence in the country’s leadership.

The 37-16 majority vote for Ratu Naiqama as Fiji’s President-elect over the opposition’s candidate, Ratu Meli Tora, also saw the support of nine opposition members who voted with the government.

Rabuka highlighted that, prior to the vote, he had received backing from his coalition partners in electing Lalabalavu, calling the show of unity “very, very encouraging.”

“We carry the mandate of the people.”

Addressing rumours about declining support within his government, Rabuka added, “We were solid in our vote. There are some troublemakers out there trying to make something out of nothing, but I’d like to tell the people that the party is solid and growing.”

Lalabalavu is expected to be sworn in early month when the serving President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere completes his term.

Lalabalavu’s appointment today also marks the end of his tenure as Speaker of the Fiji Parliament.
