Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama as well as SODELPA and People’s Alliance party leaders Viliame Gavoka and Sitiveni Rabuka congratulated leader of the Australian Labor Party Anthony Albanese following his election victory in Australia.
In a tweet, Bainimarama also welcomed Albanese’s plans “to put the climate first”, to which the new Australian Prime Minister responded via tweet as well that he looked “forward to working with Pacific countries to build a stronger Pacific family.”
In a statement, PA leader Sitiveni Rabuka congratulated Albanese on the ‘orderly and peaceful transfer of power’ adding that Australia plays a special role in helping to restore solidarity between the countries in the region.
In another statement, Rabuka acknowledged former Aus PM Scott Morrison for his “gracious acceptance of the result” and his role in the “orderly and peaceful transfer of power”, handling of election outcome that SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka also highlighted in his statement in recognition of the change in leadership in Australia.
Gavoka described the conduct of the handover as a sign of “political maturity” that “leaders in Fiji can aspire to in upholding the peaceful transition of power in a democracy.”
Albanese was sworn in this morning as Australia’s 31st PM.
