Fiji Opposition MP Given September Deadline to Provide Cane Payment Claims Evidence

Fiji Opposition MP Praveen Bala has been given until September to provide evidence supporting his claims against Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad regarding cane payments.

Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu approved Bala’s request, which was submitted in a letter yesterday.

The Speaker today ruled that Bala must make his presentation on September 11. He also informed Bala that there will be no postponement.

“In the event, he fails to present on the said day, the matter would be immediately referred to the privileges committee,” Ratu Naiqama said.

Originally, Bala was supposed to present his evidence today to substantiate his claims, which he made during the 2023-2024 Budget debate on Tuesday. He stated that Professor Biman promised a $110 per tonne cane payment to sugarcane farmers.

The evidence that Bala has been ordered to present includes the exact words, place, and time when these statements were made.
