Personnel of The Republic of Fiji Navy have been acknowledged for the work they carry out in saving lives lost out at sea including the 265 people they safely rescued in the last 12 months.
At a parade marking its 49th anniversary, Commander Humphrey Tawake thanked the men and women of the Fiji Navy for going over and above the call of duty to protect Fiji the way they have done.
“The Navy was ridiculed for many things. People will always remember the one bad thing you do but they rarely remember the good thing that we do together in keeping our nation safe at sea in rescuing people and saving lives. Last year alone we saved 265 lives at sea and we must not forget the hard work that each one of us has made for the last 12 months.”
“In the last 6 months we’ve also faced problems that we must not shy away from that have tested the way that we conduct our operations as a unit, and as a navy family we have stood together in these trying times.”
Commander Tawake spoke of the grounding of the RFNS Puamau and said due process will be followed in the wake of the Board of Inquiry findings conducted by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
