Fiji Met issues alert for damaging heavy swell, coastal flooding

June 14, 2022

People living along the southern coastal areas of Fiji are warned to keep a lookout for damaging heavy swell and possible coastal flooding from tomorrow, as a combined result of a low-pressure system experienced in the area and high spring tide or king tide.

Accordingly, the Fiji Weather Office has issued a coastal inundation alert for areas from Natadola through to Coral Coast to Pacific Harbour, the southern coastal areas of Mamanuca Group, Beqa, Kadavu, Vatulele, Southern Lomaiviti Group, Moala Group and Southern Lau Group. A damaging heavy swell alert is also in force for open waters of Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Beqa, Vatulele, Southern Koro Sea and Southern Lau Waters.

“Expect coastal sea flooding during high tides. Expect moderate southerly swells from later tomorrow over open waters of Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Beqa, Vatulele, Southern Koro Sea and Southern Lau Waters,” the weather office said.

“Those living along these coastal areas are advised to remain cautious and vigilant of coastal inundation of debris, especially during high tides. Hazardous breaking waves, and strong currents are risky for swimming, fishing and other recreational sea activities. Sea conditions can also be dangerous for small boats as it can capsize due to large waves and rough seas.”
