Fiji Faces Heavy Rainfall in the Coming Months, Weather Office Warns

November 18, 2024

Fiji is bracing for a period of heavy rainfall, with the country’s meteorologists predicting widespread “very wet conditions”, or more than the usual amount of rainfall for the remainder of the year.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service’s Early Action Rainfall Watch (EAR Watch), parts of the country are expected to experience above-average rainfall through early 2025, with a confirmed La Niña event potentially impacting agriculture, water supplies, and daily life.

From November 15 to 28, areas in Fiji’s Northern Division including Labasa, and Udu Point, Lomaiviti Group, Koro, Matuku, Rabi and Ono-i-Lau—are expected to face moderate to heavy rainfall. The forecast indicates a medium chance of very wet conditions, which could lead to flash floods and disruptions in transport and farming.

Communities in affected areas are urged to prepare for heavy rain, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

However, for the full month of November, areas such as Korovou, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and the Moala Group will continue to be at risk of heavy rainfall, with medium chance predictions of very wet conditions. The forecast also highlights Ono-i-Lau and Lomaiviti Group as potential hot spots for rain, while the rest of the country is expected to experience normal weather.

As Fiji approaches the festive season (November 2024 to January 2025), the meteorological service is warning that Western and Central Fiji, as well as Kadavu, Gau and Nairai Island, may experience sustained heavy rainfall. These areas are likely to get much more rain than usual over the three months.
