Fiji Corrections Pushes for Rehab Unit to Help Drug Offenders

September 19, 2024

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is calling for the creation of a special Rehabilitation Unit to help drug and sexual offenders get the treatment they need, as part of a bigger plan to fight the growing drug problem in the country.

The new unit would provide focused care for prisoners whose crimes are linked to drug addiction, which the FCS recognises as “a treatable disease of the brain.”

At a recent meeting between the Commissioner of Corrections and the National Narcotic Bureau Task Force, they discussed the government’s efforts to strengthen laws against illegal drugs. Plans include setting up a new Counter-Narcotics Bureau and introducing tougher penalties for drug crimes.

However, the FCS is pushing for a broader approach that goes beyond punishment.

“The criminal justice system offers a unique opportunity to address substance abuse and reduce related criminal behavior,” Commissioner of Corrections Dr Jalesi Nakarawa said.

He added that without treatment, “we’re missing the chance to improve both public health and public safety.”

Currently, the FCS lacks the resources to provide proper drug treatment, even though many inmates’ crimes are connected to addiction.

Dr Nakarawa said that having treatment programs in prisons could help reduce reoffending and improve inmates’ lives.

“Providing treatment to individuals who otherwise would not receive it will not only improve their medical and psychological outcomes but also reduce the rates of incarceration related to drug offenses,” he said.

The FCS is now looking for partners to help set up the Rehab Unit.
