Fiji Cabinet Approves Medicinal Cannabis Framework and Investment After Consultations

Fiji’s Cabinet has approved a Policy Framework to establish the medicinal cannabis industry, outlining tasks including conducting a comprehensive feasibility study, involving foreign investors, amending laws, and creating appropriate policies.

The Market Development Facility (MDF) will fund the study, and an MOU between the Ministry of Trade and Aether Pacific Pharmaceuticals (Medical Kiwi) aims to facilitate cooperation.

Medical Kiwi, a New Zealand company in cannabis cultivation and export, plans to invest FJ$65 million within 3 to 5 years, aiming to build an extraction and manufacturing facility in Fiji, subject to legal permissions. Once established, Medical Kiwi must obtain the necessary licenses and adhere to regulations.

The development builds on country-wide consultations conducted by cabinet-established taskforce. From October 9 to November 28, 2023, a total of 17 consultations were held, involving 513 participants with 287 engaging in community consultations, and 226 in public consultations.
