Fiji 2022 Elections: Registration of proposed New Generation Party

April 11, 2022

Fiji’s Registrar of Political Parties Mohammed Saneem confirms receiving an application for registration of a new political party, referred to as the proposed New Generation Party, to contest the 2022 General Elections.

Saneem did not disclose details of the new party nor the persons who submitted the application, only saying that as registrar he would now process the application as provided for under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act, the Registrar.

Processing of such applications includes assessing whether or not the party has met minimum requirements including a list of at least 5000 members from across the four divisions comprising at least 2000 from the central division, 1,750 from the western division, 1,000 from the northern division and 250 from the eastern division.

If successful, the proposed party will become the ninth and third newest party registered to contest the 2022 General Elections, following People’s Alliance in September last year and We Unite Fiji party four days ago.

The political parties act allows new parties to be registered until the day of the issuance of the writ, which is scheduled at the earliest for 26 May based on the 9 July 2022-9 January 2023 possible-election timeline.
