Evacuation as rain and wind picks up

Fijian authorities have evacuated more than 40 families from Cunnigham as Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa closes in on the Yasawa Group and the Labasa-Nabouwalu stretch today.

The 44 families had to be moved overnight given their proximity to Energy Fiji Limited’s transmission lines in Cunningham. First responders coordinated the families’ move to Delainamasi Primary School in Kinoya, National Dismac Office said in their first situation report.

A no-sail directive remains in force for all vessels in Fiji waters. Severe TC Yasa is expected to generate over 10-metre waves posing a great risk to coastal communities in its path.

In its current path, Yasa is expected to exit the Fiji group late tomorrow night, but until then, authorities are pleading with everyone to be prepared. Severe TC Yasa has changed paths numerous times since it was formed.
