Emergency preparedness pleases Central division head

Fiji’s Divisional Commissioner Central Josefa Navuku is pleased with the proactive response from people living in the central division, which he says is a sharp contrast to events of Tropical Cyclone Winston four years ago.

Speaking to MaiTV, Navuku said residents began moving into designated evacuation centres as soon as it opened yesterday.

He attributed the improved response to reiterations in the media highlighting the far-reaching impact of severe tropical cyclone Yasa given its magnitude in that it would be more destructive than TC Winston in 2016.

As at 6pm today, NDMO said that 575 people from 35 households had moved into 39 centres located within the division.

Navuku reported no major damage in the division aside from fallen trees and a landslide in Korovou, which has since been cleared.
