An eight-year-old girl has died following a road accident on Edinburgh Drive in Suva on the evening of Thursday, November 28.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the girl was crossing the road with her father when they were allegedly struck by a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.
Both were taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead on arrival. No updates have been provided on the father’s condition.
The incident brings Fiji’s road death toll for the year to 55, compared to 74 for the same period last year.
Police are continuing their investigations and have confirmed that the driver will be questioned.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of road safety for both drivers and pedestrians, particularly as traffic volumes increase during the festive season.
