Early morning chase ends in sugarcane fields

Fiji Police apprehended a man from sugarcane fields in Rakiraki this morning after he took off in a vehicle that was reported stolen from a house in Lautoka.

The owner of the car discovered the vehicle missing from his home at Johnson Road around 4.30 am. He reported it to authorities who immediately set up roadblocks.

“Roadblocks were up, our Dog Unit along with our Crime Scene Investigation team was deployed to assist in locating this stolen vehicle,” Fiji Police Chief Of Operations (COO) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abdul Khan said.

About two hours later, the vehicle was spotted driving through the Naidovi Checkpoint in Rakiraki, without stopping, police said. Officers gave chase and found the vehicle abandoned at Raiwasa. The driver fled to nearby sugarcane fields where he was arrested.

“We deployed K9 team along with police officers living in the Rakiraki Barracks to comb the area for the suspect. Within minutes, Rakiraki officers managed to apprehend the suspect,” said ACP Abdul.
