Date of reopening of schools will be announced when all-clear is given

All schools remain closed, Fiji’s Ministry of Education says, as some schools are still being used as evacuation centres.

Minister for Education Premila Kumar said: “Until these evacuation centres have been cleared, schools will remain closed. However, we do not want to delay reopening of schools, if possible.”

She said that it was important to reopen schools as soon as possible, considering that the COVID-19 pandemic has already had a major impact on the education sector.

Schools have been closed for the second week going. It was closed from 10 January as part of precautionary measures in anticipation of Tropical Cyclone Cody that impacted Fiji recently. As at Tuesday last week, 58 schools across the four divisions were being used to house evacuees.
