Fiji’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken action against 238 drivers for reckless driving by freezing their IDs and starting show-cause proceedings to decide if their licenses should be cancelled or suspended.
Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the ministry’s commitment to holding drivers accountable, citing reckless and intoxicated driving as leading causes of preventable accidents.
In 2024, the LTA has cancelled 62 licenses and suspended 26 more. Despite a decrease in road deaths—63 fatalities compared to 76 in 2023—speeding, drink-driving, and careless driving remain top concerns.
“These are all avoidable if drivers adhere to road safety measures and regulations,” Tuisawau said.
The LTA is addressing these issues through show-cause proceedings, counselling sessions for drivers, and working closely with enforcement officers and the Fiji Police. Targeted strategies include monitoring high-risk areas and enhancing night operations.
In partnership with the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji and Fiji Rugby Union, the LTA is launching road safety campaigns featuring rugby players as ambassadors to promote responsible road use among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
