COVID19 Fiji: Eight new fatalities including 6-month-old baby

A six-month-old baby with congenital medical condition is one of eight new coronavirus fatalities recorded in Fiji, bringing to four the number of people aged under 9 to have died in the country’s third wave, however the rates of death remain highest in the age group 50 and upwards.

According to the Ministry of Health’s update, the baby died on 31 January, 17 days after she was admitted at the CWM Hospital in Suva. Her medical condition, the ministry stated contributed to the severity of her illness and death.

Of the other seven, five were were aged between 64 and 75. As of yesterday, 85 per cent of 113 deaths in the third wave involved people in the 50 and above age group.

Two other deaths, both females, involved a fully vaccinated 39-year-old who died at home and a 41-year-old with pre-existing medical condition who died 17 days after she was admitted at the CWM Hospital.

The new deaths, all from the Central division, were reported from 27 January to 1 February 2022.
