COVID-19 Fiji: 131 new cases and one death

Fiji announced 131 new cases and one death for the reporting period that ended at 8am yesterday, with 63 of the new cases from the western division, 66 from the central division, two from the eastern division whereas the northern division recorded another recovery.

The lone death was recorded in the central division, involving a 63-year-old partially vaccinated man from Navua who received the first dose of a vaccine in mid-August.

Having accounted for 104 new recoveries, and deaths – both COVID-19 caused and non-COVID in nature – active cases in Fiji stands at12,951.

Western Division Active Cases

Of the 12,951 active cases, 86 per cent are located in the West, with the majority residing on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu. Active cases in the islands stands at 212 spread across the Yasawas and Mamanucas – 26 out of 56 on Malolo island, 142 active out of 146 on Naviti island, 25 out of 26 cases on Waya island, and 23 active cases on Nacula island.

Movement restrictions remain on all of the islands.

Central division

Active cases in the central division stands at 1,480 of which 57 are located on Beqa Island out of its 58 total cases. The health response team on Beqa Island has been split into two to undertake screening of the population, monitoring of cases, education, education and awareness of COVID-safe measures and vaccination and revising new positive cases.

Movement restrictions remain in force for all of Beqa.

Eastern division

Total cases on Kadavu stands at 474. Twelve patients are currently admitted at Vunisea hospital – five are COVID positive and currently in stable condition, and seven are negative for COVID-19.

Mobile outreach teams continue with their visits to villages and settlements carrying out the follow-up of primary contacts, monitoring of positive patients and clearance, roll out of COVID-19 vaccination, MCH clinic, and immunization of babies, GOPD consultation, and SOPD clinic with medicine replenishment. Kavala health team is continuing with second dose vaccinations as well as first dose jabs as part of the mop-up campaign. Movement restrictions and targeted village lockdowns for Tawava village and the villages in Yawe tikina remain in force.

Total COVID-19 cases in Fiji

There have been 49,244 cases in Fiji since March 2020, with 49,174 recorded since the outbreak in April this year.

Deaths

The deceased 63-year-old man from Navua presented to the Navua Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 12 September. He died on the same day.

His death takes Fiji’s total COVID-19 death toll to 539 of which 537 happened during the April outbreak.

Meanwhile the total number of COVID-19 positive patients who have died due to other causes stands at 366.

Hospitalisations

There are currently 110 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu. Thirty-five patients are admitted at the Lautoka Hospital, five at the FEMAT field hospital, and 70 admitted across CWM hospital, St Giles, and Makoi.

Eight patients are considered to be in severe condition, and three are in critical condition.

Test Positivity

The national 7-day average daily test positivity is 16%.

Epidemic Outlook

The 7-day average of new cases per day is 156 cases per day or 176 cases per million population per day.
