A couple is set to appear at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today, facing charges related to the purported fraudulent sale of a motor vehicle.
The charges stem from an investigation carried out by the Criminal Investigations Department’s Fraud Unit following a complaint lodged by the victim.
In September 2022, the victim, lured by a social media advertisement, expressed interest in purchasing a vehicle valued at $81,000. The accused, a 59-year-old man, allegedly assured the victim that he could facilitate the shipment of the vehicle upon receipt of a deposit.
On 20 November 2022, the victim, accompanied by another individual, met with the first accused and handed over a deposit amounting to $45,000. The accused purportedly provided assurances that the vehicle would arrive in the country by December 2022. However, despite the deposit being paid in full, the vehicle was never supplied.
The accused attempted to refund the deposit by issuing a check of $45,000. However, there was insufficient funds in the account. The account, it was revealed, belonged to the accused’s 33-year-old wife, under whom the company was registered.
