Fiji’s Young Kulas made history over the weekend as the first Fiji women’s team to play in a FIFA Women’s World Cup at any level.
The side, largely made up of Fiji-based players, was no match for 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup bronze medalists Brazil, losing 9-0 in their opening game in the world tourney in Colombia yesterday.
In the opening game, head coach Angelina Chua chose to go with a 4-3-3 formation. The team included 15-year-old goalkeeper Aliana Vakaloloma and a defensive line composed of Seruwaia Laulaba, Talei Moodie, Sonia Alfred, and Angeline Rekha. The midfield featured Caroline Qalivere, Kasanita Tabua, and Preeya Singh, while the forward line included captain Adi Bakaniceva, Elesi Tabunase, and Adi Naveli.
Brazil scored their opening goal within four minutes of the game, then four more for a 5-0 lead at the breather.
Despite the scoreline, Chua thanked Brazil for showing her side international stage footy.
She told OFC that the players gave their all and described the outing as a chance for Fiji “to be seen by the world.”
The Young Kulas will face Canada in two days.
