Baber names strong squad for Oceania 7s

Fiji Mens 7s coach Gareth Baber has announced a strong 18-member squad to travel to Australia for the Oceania Sevens tournament scheduled to be held on 25-27 June in Townsville.

The 3-day event will feature four men’s and women’s rugby teams with three national teams and an Oceania Barbarians side to compete in both the men’s and women’s event. The three national teams are Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand men’s and women’s teams.

The Fiji 7s men’s team is the current Olympic Gold medalist and the Australian Womens team is the current Olympic Gold medalist for the women’s draw.

“The Australian Government is supporting the travel costs for Fiji’s national women and men’s sevens teams to compete in the Challenge, through the Pacific Step-Up program, PacificAus Sports. The $52m program aims to build sustainable, elite sport pathways between Australia and the Pacific, with a major focus on women and girls” said a statement by Oceania Rugby.

The Fiji Mens Sevens team 18-member squad is as follows: Kalione Nasoko, Josua Vakurinabili, Meli Derenalagi, Kavekini Tabu, Iosefo Masikau, Asaeli Tuivuaka, Joseva Talacolo, Taniela Sadrugu, Rusiate Nasove, Jerry Tuwai, Livai Ikanikoda, Napolioni Bolaca, Waisea Nacuqu, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Kaminieli Rasakau, Sireli Maqala, Kitione Taliga, Alosio Naduva.

The men’s and women’s national teams will travel to Australia today and will have to complete a mandatory hotel quarantine period on arrival.
