Autumn Nations Cup organisers cancel Italy versus Fiji game

Fiji’s second Autumn Nations Cup against Italy this weekend has been cancelled after more than 20 Flying Fijians tested positive for coronavirus.

In a statement today, tournament organisers said: “the decision was taken after the latest round of COVID-19 tests undertaken yesterday by the Fijian team returned 29 positive cases this morning.”

This is Fiji’s second consecutive Autumn Nations Cup to be cancelled, after their opening game against France was called off – the result of which, the French, were early this morning awarded a bonus point victory 28-0.

“We remain in constant contact with the Fijian squad to address the situation. The main priority at present is the welfare of all players and management,” the statement read.

“The potential impact on Fiji’s remaining matches is currently under review.”

Fiji is left to play Scotland in their final fixture scheduled for 28 November.

Meanwhile, Fiji Rugby Union was contacted for comments, but none was forthcoming.
