Australian Government Aware of Fijian Worker Mistreatment Claims

August 20, 2024

The Australian Government has acknowledged claims of mistreatment of Fijian workers under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, following a social media post on 18 August 2024.

The post, shared on Facebook and LinkedIn, highlighted the experiences of Christine, a Fijian worker who reportedly faced difficult conditions before her death.

According to the post, Christine’s relative detailed issues such as racism, bullying, and unsafe working conditions faced by Pacific Island workers.

An Australian Government spokesperson confirmed that the government is investigating the claims, and is currently in contact with Fijian authorities.

“The government takes all allegations of worker mistreatment seriously and immediately investigates,” the spokesperson said, “The wellbeing of Pacific and Timor-Leste workers in Australia is of the highest priority for the Australian Government.”

The spokesperson also noted that workers under the PALM scheme are entitled to the same rights and protections as Australian workers.

“Where breaches of Australian law are identified, these are referred to the appropriate authority or regulator,” they added.

The allegations have prompted calls for a review of the PALM scheme, with some arguing that it facilitates exploitation.

Meanwhile, comments are still being sought from Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh. However, in an earlier report he highlighted similar incidents of mistreatment of Fijian workers in the labour mobility scheme, Singh referred to the involvement of “bad employers”.

Workers or community members with concerns are encouraged to contact the PALM scheme support line or email for assistance.
