Fiji’s Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS) is set to open applications for round one of competency-based training grants this Saturday.
These grants, approved in the 2023 – 2024 National Budget, aim to provide a “quick fix labor solution” in the Construction, Tourism & Hospitality, and Automotive industries.
A total of 1800 awards will be made available for competency-based training, targeting unemployed youths and adults seeking to enhance their skills. Each student will receive a grant of $500 for a minimum of one month of training. The allocation for the training grants is as follows:
- 500 Grants for the Construction Industry: Covering basics of Tile laying, Painting, Block laying, Joinery, Plumbing, and Cabinet Making.
- 1,000 Grants for the Tourism & Hospitality Industry: Focusing on basics of House Keeping, Restaurant Service, and Front Office Operations.
- 300 Grants for the Automotive Industry: Encompassing basics of Panel Beating and Automotive Painting.
Competency-based training will be provided by existing training providers, including vocational centers, and registered businesses in the private sector that have a training facility or academy.
To be eligible for the grants, applicants must be Fiji citizens, at least 17 years old at the time of application, and not currently employed or sponsored by TSLS. Additionally, they must obtain an offer letter from a training provider or industry-based organization offering courses in the relevant skill sets.
Applicants are required to fill out the grant application form available for download on TSLS’s website at https://www.tsls.com.fj/Forms. Completed application forms, along with an attached official ID and Offer Letter from the institution, must be emailed to grants@tsls.com.fj. It is essential to ensure all necessary information is provided, as incomplete applications will not be processed by TSLS.
The application window for this training scheme will close on 30 September 2023.
