Australia defeated New Zealand in extra time 19-14 to win the London 7s whilst Fiji finished with bronze at the Twickenham Stadium this morning.
In beating the Kiwis, the Aussies picked up their first gold medal since the 2018 London edition and their first Cup final victory over the All Blacks 7s in 20 years.
Fiji accounted for Samoa 31-26 in the third-place playoff to win bronze, and are fourth on the standings with 104 points.
The results also mean the winner of the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series 2022 will be decided in the final event in Los Angeles in the US scheduled for 27-28 August at the Dignity Health Sports Park.
The Blitzboks remain in the top spot in the standings with 124 points, ahead of Australia on 122 and Argentina in third with 118 points.
Prior to the series finale, the action moves to Birmingham, England for the Commonwealth Games on 29-31 July. Also, this year is the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 scheduled for 9-11 September in South Africa.
Meanwhile, the schedule for the 2023 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series is due to be announced this week. The series also doubles as the qualifiers to the top four men’s and women’s teams for the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
