Woman, 25, among 63 charged for non-sexual offenses

Fiji’s Office of the DPP charged 63 people last month for non-sexual violence offenses, including a 25-year-old woman accused of trying to kill her six-month-old daughter by giving her benzene.

Her baby daughter was one of 49 victims of cases filed in the high court of Fiji throughout April.

Three men in their 20s were charged with murder, including a 27-year-old man alleged to have killed his 25-year-old girlfriend, a 29-year-old man over the death of a 60-year-old man and a 22-year-old over the death of a 52-year-old man.

In another incident, a 70-year-old woman was alleged to have attacked her 55-year-old husband with a knife as he slept.

A 36-year-old woman was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm to her 25-year-old step sister while in another incident, a 26-year-old man was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm and attempted wounding of a 36-year-old family member. A 43-year-old man was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm to his 47-year-old defacto partner.

There was one incident where the case against two sisters, aged 40 and 35 years charged with trafficking in persons and obtaining property by deception were discontinued because of insufficient evidence. The younger of the two however was handed a lesser charge of five counts of general dishonesty.

Six other cases were withdrawn because of insufficient evidence.

Among those charged as well were two police officers, one charged with drunk and disorderly conduct while the other was charged with abuse of office for allegedly failing to register $2,600 as an exhibit.
