The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua versus Western Force game scheduled for Sunday 30 January in Ballina has been cancelled, CEO Brian Thorburn confirms.
This, after the Western Force could not make the trip because of the delay in the reopening of the Western Australian border.
“The Drua share the disappointment of fans and stakeholders about the cancellation and sincerely apologise to those planning a trip to Ballina this Sunday to watch the trial match,” Thorburn said.
The team will instead proceed with an internal practice match made up of two teams from the squad.
“Fans are welcome to watch this practice match, which kicks off at 4pm at the Ballina Rugby Union ground. All visitors to the grounds are requested to follow NSW COVID-safety protocols at all times to protect themselves and others.”
In order to protect the squad bubble, fans are advised that social distancing requirements will apply at all times including the post-match.
“Contact with the players is unfortunately not possible, as a risk mitigation measure against COVID-19. The Fijian Drua thank all fans and stakeholders for their patience and understanding of these protocols, as the team continues preparations for our inaugural Super Rugby Pacific season.”
