Fiji set up for first meeting against Spain in 22 years

Fiji will play Spain, Wales and Georgia in their November internationals this year, according to World Rugby.

The Flying Fijians will open their November campaign against Spain on 6 November, then taken on Wales eight days later before wrapping up their tour against Georgia on 20 November.

The match against Spain scheduled to be held in Madrid will be Fiji’s first meeting against Spain in 22 years. The first and last time the two sides played was in 1999. Captained by Joeli Veitayaki, Fiji defeated Spain 39-20 after leading 20-3 at half-time. Fiji’s first line-up had the likes of Simon Raiwalui, Koli Sewabu, Marika Vunibaka, Viliame Satala, Isaia Rasila, Seta Tawake, Lawrence Little, Waisake Sotutu, Fero Lasagavibau, Nicky Little, Apenisa Naevo, Niko Qoro, Ili Tamanivalu and Moses Rauluni. Sevens maestro Waisale Serevi started off the bench alongside Alifereti Doviverata and Paula Biu who picked up their first Test caps for Fiji.

Against Wales, Fiji lost 17-29 in their most recent game during the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. It was the Flying Fijians’ tenth defeat by Wales in their last 12 meetings. Of their other two meetings, Fiji won 38-34 in one of the 2007 France Rugby World Cup pool matches and in their next meeting three years later, held Wales to a 16-all draw in Cardiff during the November tour that year. Fiji will play Wales again in Cardiff on 14 November.

The venue for their final pool game against Georgia is still to be confirmed. The two teams last met during the Autumn Nations Cup last year. Fiji won the encounter 38-24 after leading 19-10 at half-time.
