COVID 19 Fiji: 22 new cases, 11 deaths and record recovery

Fiji recorded its biggest number of recoveries overnight, resulting in a huge drop in active cases to well below 9,000, for the first time in a little over two months.

With 3,941 new recoveries plus 11 deaths inclusive of deaths with COVID-19, reported for the 24 hour period ending at 8am yesterday, total active cases stands at 8,898.

There have been 41,189 total recoveries since 2020.

Transmission Update

With 22 new coronavirus infections last night, there have been 51,154 cases since the outbreak that started in April 2021, or a total of 51,224 since March 2020.

Deaths

There were 11 deaths recorded overnight, including one fatality from COVID-19.

The lone COVID-19 death was reported in the central division, involving a 58-year-old man from Suva who died at home on 1 October 2021. He was not vaccinated.

There have been 634 deaths due to COVID-19 in Fiji, with 632 of these deaths during the outbreak that started in April this year. There have been 503 COVID-positive patients who have died from serious medical conditions.

Hospitalisations

There are currently 74 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital of which 37 admitted at the Lautoka Hospital and 37 admitted at CWM hospital, St Giles, and Makoi. Eight patients are considered to be in severe condition, and seven are in critical condition.

Screening Update

A total of 571 individuals were screened and 154 swabbed at our stationary screening clinics in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 706,348 individuals screened and 103,216 swabbed to date. The mobile screening teams screened a total of 81 individuals over the last 24 hours. This brings cumulative total to 851,800 individuals screened and 77,390 swabbed by the mobile teams.

Testing Update

A total of 372,631 samples have been tested since this outbreak started in April 2021, with 415,492 tested since testing began in March 2020. A total of 312 tests were reported for 3 October. Lab testing data for two labs are still being received. Therefore, lab testing data is expected to increase. The 7-day daily test average is 1,000 tests per day or 1.1 tests per 1,000 population. Weekly testing is at 9.7 tests per 1000 population, which remains above the WHO recommended level of 4 tests per 1000 population per week. The national 7-day average daily test positivity is 6 per cent.

Vaccination Update

As of 3 October 2021: 593,442 adults in Fiji have received their first dose of the vaccine and 462,441 have received their second doses. Based on our updated total population of 618,173 people aged 18 years and over (adults), the vaccination coverage rates are 96% for adults who have received at least one dose, and 74.8% are now fully vaccinated nationwide.

Epidemic Outlook

The 7-day average of new cases per day is 60 cases per day or 67 cases per million population per day.
