COVID-19 in Fiji: Woman, 49, who missed second dose among 15 deaths

Fifteen more COVID-19 deaths were announced in Fiji last night, seven unvaccinated and eight were partially vaccinated, one of whom, a 49-year-old woman, had received her first dose in early April which meant she would have been due for her second dose in June end or early July if she waited 12 weeks or as early as May end or mid-June if she had opted for the 8-week gap.

According to the Ministry of Health, the woman from Lautoka presented to the Lautoka Hospital in severe respiratory distress and died on 11 August, five days after her admission.

Two other women – a 51-year-old from Ba and a 69-year-old from Nadi – had received their first dose in early June, which meant that they would have been due for their second dose between August end and early September as per the 12-week gap or between 1 August and 8 August if they opted for the 8-week gap.

The Ba resident was declared dead on arrival at the Ba Hospital on 10 August and the woman from Nadi died on 12 August, the same day she was presented to the Nadi Hospital.

Of the unvaccinated seven, five were declared dead arriving at a health facility and two made it to the hospital but died later the same day. Of the partially vaccinated eight, three were declared dead on arrival, and five made it to a health facility. Of the five that made it to the hospital, two died the same day and three died between 1 and five days of their admission.

DEATHS

Of the 15 deaths, one was reported from the central division and 14 were reported from the western division.

    • He died on 11 August, one day after admission
  • 49-year-old woman, Lautoka
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in early April
    • She did not receive the second dose.
    • Died on 11 August, five days after admission
  • 60-year-old man, Lautoka
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in early July
    • Declared dead on arrival at Lautoka Hospital
  • 81-year-old woman, Lautoka
    • Partially vaccinated having received the first dose in late July
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Lautoka Hospital on 10 August
  • 69-year-old man, Lautoka
    • He was not vaccinated
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Lautoka Hospital on 10 August
  • 65 year old woman, Ba.
    • She was not vaccinated
    • Presented to the Ba Mission Hospital on 9 August in severe respiratory distress, dying the same day.
  • 85 year old woman, Nadi
    • She was not vaccinated
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Nadi Hospital on 11 August
  • 60-year-old man, Tavua
    • He was not vaccinated
    • Presented to the Tavua Hospital on 12 August in severe respiratory distress and died on the same day.
  • 80-year-old man, Rakiraki
    • He was not vaccinated.
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Rakiraki Hospital on 10 August.
  • 56-year-old woman, Sigatoka
    • She was not vaccinated
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Sigatoka Hospital on 9 August.
  • 58-year-old man, Sigatoka
    • He was not vaccinated
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Sigatoka Hospital on 10 August
  • 69-year-old woman, Nadi
    • Partially vaccinated having received the first dose early June
    • Presented to the Nadi Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 12 August. She died the same day.
  • 61-year-old woman, Nadi
    • Partially vaccinated having received the first dose late July
    • Presented to the Lautoka Hospital in severe respiratory distress. She died on 12 August, one day after admission
  • 56-year-old woman, Rakiraki
    • Partially vaccinated having received the first dose late July
    • She presented to the Rakiraki Hospital in severe respiratory distress.
    • She was transferred to the Lautoka Hospital and died on the same day – 12 August
  • 51-year-old woman, Ba
    • Partially vaccinated having received the first dose early June
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Ba Mission Hospital on – 10 August

Non-COVID Deaths

There have been seven more deaths of COVID-19 positive patients, but causes of death have been attributed to pre-existing health conditions.

TOTAL DEATHS

Total deaths COVID and non-COVID since the first case in March 2020 stands at 552, with 550 of those deaths during the outbreak that started in April.

Of the 550 deaths, 358 (65.1%) were attributed to COVID and 192 (35.9%) were attributed to pre-existing medical conditions.

The national 7-day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths per day is seven. The 7-day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths per day in the central division is four deaths and the western division is three deaths.

HOSPITALISATION

There are currently 291 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital, 72 of whom are admitted to the Lautoka Hospital, 62 at the FEMAT field hospital, and 157 admitted across CWM hospital, St Giles, and Makoi. Of the 291 patients, 58 are considered to be in severe condition, and nine are in critical condition.

New COVID-19 infections and Recoveries

We have 644 new cases of COVID-19 to report for the 24 hour period that ended at 8 am Friday 13 August.

Of the 644 cases, 87 (13.5%) are from the western division and 557 (86.5%) are from the central division.

There have been 322 new recoveries reported since the last update, which means that there are now 24,281 active cases. Of the active cases, 18,210 (75%) are in the central division and 6071 (25%) in the western division.

There have been 39,386 cases during the outbreak that started in April 2021. We have recorded a total of 39,456 cases in Fiji since the first case was reported in March 2020, with 14,623 recoveries.
