Two Fijians are among three crew members who were rescued from the fishing vessel Tiro 2, and two other Fijians are among five who remain missing at sea after they abandoned the vessel “in relation to an alleged violent incident onboard”
In an update this evening, the Fiji Navy said with the assistance of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, they located one of the survivors yesterday afternoon. The Fijian survivors who had remained on board the vessel were picked up early this morning by a partner fishing vessel Sam Weon 11.
“FV Tiro 2 sank this morning after taking in water last night.RFNS Kikau transferred the survivor (from liferaft) to the Fiji Police in Nadi through a Navy team operating out of Denarau this morning, before departing again for sea to search. The RFN’s focus now is to search for the missing five and to retrieve the two survivors who were picked up by Sam Weon 11,” Fiji Navy said.
The Fiji Navy also stated that information regarding what transpired on board the vessel that led to “the tragic incident”will be investigated by the Police.
Police spokesperson Savaira Tabua told MaiTV that two of the three rescued crew members are being held at a police station in Nadi and will be transferred to Suva soon for further investigation. She did not provide an update on the third crew member.
Overseas media reports stated that the five crew members who remain missing had jumped overboard without life jackets.
