Fiji Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer John O’Connor says they would love to participate in international tournaments ahead of the Olympic 7s, but the COVID-19 pandemic remains the biggest hindrance.
O’Connor said there are a number of tournaments organised overseas, including in Dubai that FRU could send teams to, but they will have to also contend with COVID-19 protocols in these countries.
In addition to observing a 14-day mandatory quarantine period upon arrival, the Fiji 7s team will also need to test negative before it can participate in any tournament, O’Connor told the Fijian media at a press conference in Suva today.
“It’s a lot of planning and a lot of uncertainties.”
The Tokyo Olympics is scheduled for 25-31 July. Fiji is the defending men’s 7s champions.
