Man sentenced to 15-plus years for rape of daughter

You have scarred the life of your daughter forever, a Lautoka high court judge told a 59-year-old man convicted of raping his biological twice.

Justice Sunil Sharma sentenced the man to 15 years and 4 months in prison.

He will not be considered for parole until he has served 13 years of his time.

The Tavua man who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim was convicted of rape after numerous adjournments in the magistrate’s court.

Court documents showed that the man first raped his daughter when she was 11 years old during the December school holidays in 2005. He raped her again on 29 November 2006.

The incidents came to light after the victim told one of her friends during a school-counselling program.  Her schoolteacher was informed and police thereafter.

Passing sentence, Justice Sunil said children are entitled to live their lives free from any form of physical or emotional abuse.

“When family members sexually abuse children, violating the Domestic Violence Act, they should not expect any mercy from this court.”

Then addressing the man, Justice Sunil said: “you cannot be forgiven for what you have done to her.”

Justice Sunil also issued a permanent non-molestation and non-contact order against the man.
